Welding Stainless Steel

Welding is the process of permanently joining two metals together by applying heat. There are various techniques used depending on the type of metal.

Stainless steel has generally good weldability and can be joined through several methods, including laser and electron beam welding, arc welding, friction, brazing, and resistance welding. However, despite its weldability, stainless steel is not the easiest material to work with, and welding it correctly requires skill and experience.

One challenge is that stainless steel is not available in flux-cored form. This means that when using a MIG welder or wire feed, gas shielding is essential.

Tips for Welding Stainless Steel:

  • Clean the material thoroughly before welding to remove chromium buildup, oil, dirt, or paint.
  • Use low heat, especially for thin sheets, to avoid distortion. Weld in short bursts of 3–4 seconds and let the steel cool between passes.
  • When using a stick welder, only stainless steel rods should be applied. Regular rods or wire will cause the welds to rust.
  • To protect welded areas, consider applying a primer or clear coating.

Preferred Method: TIG Welding

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) is the most common process for stainless steel. It allows welding at low current and low heat, making it ideal for thin materials while producing strong, visually appealing welds. Pure argon is typically used as shielding gas, sometimes blended with hydrogen, nitrogen, or helium for specific applications.
