Forging: Strength and Precision in Manufacturing

Forging is one of the oldest manufacturing processes, with roots stretching back thousands of years. Over time, traditional blacksmith workshops have evolved into high-tech manufacturing facilities, using CAD engineering and advanced production equipment to meet the demands of modern industry.

Industrial forging is carried out using hammers (powered by air, electricity, hydraulics, or steam) or mechanical and hydraulic presses.

Why Forging Matters

Forging produces parts, known as forgings, that are stronger than components made by other metalworking processes. This increased strength allows for reduced sectional thickness and overall weight without compromising part integrity, making forgings ideal for applications where reliability and safety are critical.

Additional benefits of forging include:

  • Lower material costs
  • Shorter lead times
  • Extended tool life

Although forgings are essential in many industries, they are often hidden inside cars, airplanes, ships, drilling equipment, engines, and missiles.

Common Forging Methods

Open Die Forging
This method uses hammers and presses, continuing the tradition of the pre-industrial blacksmith. Open die forging is typically used for large parts such as shafts, sleeves, and disks, with part weights ranging from 2 kg to 200,000 kg.

Closed Die Forging
In this method, dies move toward each other to partially or fully enclose the workpiece. Heated raw material is placed in the bottom die, and the top die impacts the material, forming it into the desired shape.

Impression Die Forging
Forgings are formed on a horizontal machine called an upsetter. The stock is held between a fixed and moving die while a horizontal ram applies forging pressure to shape the part.

Stainless Steel Forgings

Full range of billets in rounds and square carried in carbon, alloy and stainless steel for forging purposes. Light to heavy forgings are manufactured in our closed die, press and hammer forgings plants.
